We are throwing a birthday party for our 5 year old. She wants to invite her whole pre-school class. After talking to parents of some of her friends who's children did the same thing, said that a lot of people don't show because they don't want to spend money on a present and don't feel its appropriate to show up empty handed. So I thought about putting something on the invitation that she just wants her friends from school to come and play, have cake etc. That they don't need to bring presents, any suggestions?

I have always seen this done, just in a small font at the end of the birthday invitation say , "Your presence is so and so's gift" That is the proper way, and will make others feel comfortable about not bringing a gift!

Put on the invitation No gifts please. I wouldn't be offended to see that. It is nice that some parents want their child to enjoy the day without escessive presents. Good for you!

You could also say at the bottom:

"----(child's name) would prefer you make a donation to your favorite charity, rather than bring a present."

So for some, charity can begin at home.

"No gifts please" on the invite. If people still bring gifts, don't refuse them, merely give them to charity later on.

Just write something on the invitation to the effect of "Please join us for cake, games, and playtime to celebrate _______'s birthday. No gifts please"
