The USA backed the mujaheddin, hence the Stinger missiles we heard about a few years ago, which are American products. The Soviet war in Afghanstan was called their Vietnam. It was a protracted conflict (~1980-1988). They couldn't quite conquer the Afghanis.
I personally believe the war did not actually bring about the fall of communism in Russia and Europe, but Gorbachev, the one to bring the Soviets out, was the main factor.

In such question there may be several reasons for fall of communizm in USSR. Regarding backing of another country is quite possible and it is true.In fact, the fall of communism is due to Russian economy at the time of communizm and the Chief of Russian did not provide attention towards economy facing by the public.Russa is not so productive country like others in Europe and US etc. In my opinion,Afgans are not responsible to help bring fall of Communizm and Russa due to neighbouring country had helped Afgans for the safty of the Russa with the fear such activities as was carrying on at that time in Afgan may also arise in Russa. From this point of view,Russians were alright to safe guard their country to help Afgans.Another reason may be Russians were too much envolved in Europe just after the 2ed World War without taking care of their economy, the public was facing in Russa. I think,Afgans were not responsible for the fall of Communizm but to safe guard Russa, they did good work to help Afgans on human back ground as neighbouring country.

Yes, they probably did, unknowingly! The eighties was a turbulent time in Afghanistan, with Russia trying to do a number on the Afghanistans, and the US unminding everything they trid to achieve.
The frustration of pulling out without victory, and the loss of prestige for the Soviets, did not help their image during a period of self destruction, for the USSR !

yes it did the failure of the USSR in Afghanistan helped to shake public confidence in the Soviet leadership and the high number of casualties which the Soviet press tried to hide led to a lot of unrest and public backlash. Something that the current administration might well keep in mind in the US.

It helped with the fall of communism as the Russians lost out to the US backed fighters in Afghanistan who are now the Taliban, more or less.
But it was not the prime reason that alledged communism failed, it never was communism anyway.
