VERY EASY TO MOD.
MANY PARTS AVAILABLE FOR IT.
THEY NEED A LITTLE TUNE UP, SOME PRIMITIVE PERFORMANCE PARTS UNDER THE HOOD TO GET INTO 11S AT THE DRAG.
FOR A FIRST CAR IT WILL BE PRICEY TO MAINTAIN CAUSE IT'S OLD, USES TOO MUCH GAS AND THE INSURANCE RATES WILL GO REALLY HIGH SINCE IT'S A V8 AND U DONT HAVE ANY DRIVING RECORD.
BUT IF YOU R READY TO PAY FOR IT AN IF YOU REALLY WANT IT...... GO FOR IT.
IT;S AN AMAZING CAR FOR A TEENAGER.

back_emily is nowhere close to correct with her info so just ignore it. When comparing cars 1/4 mile times its only fair to compare cars of the same years. For example even though the toyota tt supras are looked upon as fast cars, a 05,06, and 07 gt mustang is a faster 1/4 mile car stock then all the fastest stock tt supra except one mag in 1993 had a 93 supra do a 13.1. Other then that, every supra built ran slower then 13.5. So its always best to compare a car to cars that were built around the same time. I will list a site below that you can go to in order to look at all the stock 1/4 mile times you want.
The 5.0 mustang everyone thinks of are the fox body mustangs built between 87-92. 5.0 engines were put in the stangs all the way up till either 94 or 95 I believe but I will focus on the main 5.0's. The 87 gt stang ran a 14.4 1/4 mile, the 87 camaro iroc-z ran a 15.3 1/4 mile, the 89 supra turbo ran a 15.2 1/4 mile, the 87 firebird trans am ran a 15.5 1/4 mile, the 87 mazda rx7 turbo ran a 15.2 1/4 mile, and the 87 nissian 300zx ran a 16.5 1/4 mile. So as you can see, when compared to other cars of its era, the mustang is faster then any of them. Even if we go to 1992 the results are the same with the other cars from 1992 I could find. The 92 v8 lx mustang ran a 14.8 1/4 mile, the 92 camaro z28 ran a 15.2 1/4 mile, the 91 tt supra ran a 15.6 1/4 mile, and the 1990 nissian 300zx twin turbo ran a 15.0 1/4 mile. So once again, compared to cars of its era, the 5.0 stang is the fastest. Not to mention, that the 5.0 stangs are the one of the easiest cars to modify on the planet and have more aftermarket parts available for them then any other car. Now if you compare the 5.0 stangs to cars of today, its just like the supras. Todays slowest "sports cars" run around 14.0-14.5 1/4 miles. There is the cost factor though, for an additional 2k into your 5.0 stang you can run 13.0 1/4 miles and for an additional 4k you can get to the high 11's or low 12's. Compare that to the cost of a $30,000 nissian 350z which runs a 14.0 1/4 mile. Todays V8 mustangs run a 13.5 1/4 mile, but they also cost 25k+ new. So when considering bang for the buck, the 5.0 stangs are a tremendous vehical

For a first car, it depends on the responsibility level of the driver. I had one after a year of driving and still have it yet today. The cars it can beat in the 1/4 depends a lot on the driver, but you can expect to run mid to high 14's low 15's depending on the track and assuming it is stock. The car is defenitely fast enough to get into trouble with. Compared to todays Mustangs and Sports cars it may seem a bit slow, but that is very easily remedied with the aboundance of aftermarket parts available for it.

I have 2 of them, an 89 GT and a 92 LX and I love them. When I had my 89 stock it would take on Neons, Civics, mostly any other little rice burner and take'em. Now my 89 has a 5.4L Ford Lightning motor in it and its anything but stock. Factory 5.0's have a lot of torque, and it can go about 130 miles an hour but it takes a while to hit it once you go to 5th gear. For a first car it would be great they are reliable and parts are relatively cheap. It doesnt cost much to fix them up either.

I loved my 88 5.0 LX notchback and I wish I owned it now. No, it is not a fast car in stock form compared to todays standards, only 225 HP from the factory as I recall. But with modded heads, better exhaust and a supercharger you should be fine, Man, was that car fun... Thanks for the memory...

They are a powerful, dependable car. My 88 5.0 LX has over 160,000 miles on it and runs great. I have been pretty hard on the car, I ran NOS and slicks for a long time, and the orginal clutch lasted 130,000 miles.
3.55 gears really help in the acceleration dept.

It would be a great first car. A 5.0 engine is huge, and a bigger engine means more power, which means more speed. If you want to test out its abilities, please do it on a non-busy road like in a neighborhood, but don't run over children or people walking their dogs.

Love it that's why I own one. Stock they are not fast. However with a few upgrades you can really get some horsepower out of them not to mention they are reliable. If I could afford it I'd own 10 of them.
