FIV's get dry skin occasionally (an oil supplement helps) and the runny eyes.

If it's the herpes virus causing the runny eyes, usually 250-500mg of lysine a day for a week will clear this up. I get the generic and crush the pills and sprinkle it over the dry food. It doesn't have a taste. The gel caps taste awful so don't use those.

Keep them away from sick cats, and that's most of what you have to watch for. You can boost their immune system a bit, feed really good food, and keep an eye on the mouth thing.

There's two good FIV lists on yahoo groups, you can talk to owners of FIV cats there who have seen just about everything! I've got two FIV+ males and they've been pretty good for at least 9 years now with the disease.

As for the stomatitis, there seems to be a feline bartonella connection that's being researched now, so it's good to keep up with the new research. Bartonella is treatable, that's the good news!

Bless you for caring for this special baby!

I have had 2 FIV cats cross my path. The first was only for the short time between January 2001 - April 1, 2003. He was an adult unneutered male stray. I didn't know he was FIV+, had never heard of this disease and had been a cat owner at that time for 11 years. He was a gentle creature that I helped cross the bridge because he was suffering and the disease had taken him to the point of no return. If I had known about the disease, I could have had the opportunity to work with my vet and watch for signs.

He did not have teeth or skin problems. His were internal, he first had problems of becoming constipated. Then the disease attacked his liver and he became very ill fast.

The second adult male that found me was tested up front for FIV and FeLV. He has the skin problems. Otherwise he is strong and healthy right now.

The best thing I can suggest is to have regular vet check-ups every 6 months so the vet can see if there are any changes in your kitty and address them immediately.

Here is an article that has some interesting information and is easy to read for us lay people...don't need a degree in vet medicine to understand it!

Hope this helps! Prayers to you and Purrs to kitty!

You can ask you vet for advice on this matter and they should be able to give you the symptons of the later stages for you to look out for.

Hope this helps
