do you know what i mean? when a dog licks you, is it really just trying to get the salt off your skin? or is it really showing affection?

Is it jumping around and happy? Or is it sitting near you and repetitively licking you in one spot? It can mean many things, it can mean it is trying to dominate you or it may be something it thinks you like and that it does have affection for you.

It's a bit of both. People say that it's a show of affection because they like to apply human characteristics to their pets. Dogs don't really have any concept of kissing, but they don't lick things they don't like, either. Dogs, like cats, only lick something when they are happy or excited and have a friendly feeling toward whatever/whoever they're licking, so it's reasonable for people to say that being licked is a "doggy kiss".

Either it is trying to kiss you, or you somehow smell like a T-bone. lol Yes, I believe it is a sign of affection. How many dogs lick you when they're angry? How else are they suppose to kiss? =)

Dogs don't know the meaning of affection as we do. They lick their Mum in order to get milk, they lick us for the same reasons, to get food. It's very easy to assume that dogs have the same needs and emotions as humans, but the sad fact is , they don't. Your dog expects you to produce something when he licks you, almost certainly food. !!

I think a little bit of both, cuz they like the salt on your hand. But they are also kissing you.

If they're wagging their tale when they're licking you, it's affection, cuz tale wagging signifies happiness.
