ive seen on the news marines carrying shotguns. do they use it as a sidearm? or is it only for breeching/clearing, or CQB? also, is there a specific MOS that carries it? or do infantryman have the choice to carry it.

The use of shotguns in mission dependant. Mostly shotguns go to ppl that clear buildings, or to gunners who have them incase ppl get close to the vehicles. And do infantryman have choices??? No they do what the corps tells them.

Use of the shorgun is not new. For CQB nothing is better since you dont have to be exact in your aim to make some serious damage. The allies used shotguns as far back as WWI for trench clearing. It is used in conjuction with a squad to keep its distance limitaions from being a liability. Just like the SAW Squad Automatic Weapon and the grenade launcher the M203 it is assgined to the infrantry man. It is alo a very good weapon for psycholigical deterance, everyone knows the sound of the shotgun.

Many (but not most) infantrymen (sorry, Marines, I've lumped you in that category) will carry a shotgun, usually for CQB and breaching, yes.
