It's illegal because politicians make the laws instead of scientists or doctors.

The companies that sell tobacco and alcohol make a lot of money and do not want to give that up. They pressure the government into keeping their products legal and keeping other products (marijuana...) illegal and off their market.

Your assumption that Marijuana is safe to use is incorrect.

Marijuana has 50 to 70 per cent more tar that cigarettes. According to the NIDA:

Cancer
It’s hard to know for sure whether regular marijuana use causes cancer. But it is known that marijuana contains some of the same, and sometimes even more, of the cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per day may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day (15) .

Lungs and airways
People who smoke marijuana often develop the same kinds of breathing problems that cigarette smokers have: coughing and wheezing. They tend to have more chest colds than nonusers. They are also at greater risk of getting lung infections like pneumonia.

Immune system
Animal studies have found that THC can damage the cells and tissues in the body that help protect against disease. When the immune cells are weakened you are more likely to get sick.

Marijuana also can damage a woman's ovaries and eggs and causes changes in the body on the chromosome level.

People have died from the use of Marijuana, As it is even more damaging than to the body than cigarettes.

Those who use Marijuana for medical reasons use a pill form that does not contain the harmful parts of the weed as one smokes. Same for nicotine gum....

It also prevents lung cancer, alzhiemer's disease, and alleviates severe pain, anxiety, and myriad other conditions the pharmicutical companies would like you to believe can only be "cured" by their concoctions. My info is from AP articles that have done studies, not my own opinion.

It is also the biggest cash crop in the US. The government makes too much money arresting innocent people to give it up. . .

Besides that, they would like us all to fit into their little molds and be like everyone else. Do they want a bunch of creative free-thinkers walking the streets?

if alcohol was a new thing like marijuana it would also be illegal, the only reason it isn't is because it would be impossible to stop people drinking it now it is so wide spread and socially accepted because our ancestors did it, same as smoking, if smoking was quite a new thing it would also be made illegal

It was probably determined that it was easier to control and tax the sale of alcohol than marijuana.
