Above answers, I don't agree with. I live in NYC and I have lived here since I was 6 years old. I'm 31 now.
I can't say how much it would cost for the trip to GO to NYC from whereever you are. But for one adult and 2 kids to eat, go to ellis island, liberty, ferry ride (staten island ferry is free or $1 or something), broadway play (you should really book this earlier. You can get orchestra seats for about $60/person if you do. Or go to TIX located at South Street Seaport and around Time Square. They have tickets for that day shows that were not sold. You MIGHT find tickets for Les Miserable and maybe you won't). But all in all, I would say you need about 500 or so. The most expensive would be the broadway show if you don't find tickets for cheap ahead of time before you come here. If you look at your company's perk's or look for discount tickets, you can find it for around 60-70 as I mentioend before.
Also, don't take the taxi unless the destiantion is very close. Take the subway to get around. It's 2.00 / person each way.
If you are not sure how to take the subway, ask the worker in the booths. There are alot fo things you can do in NYC that won't cost you arm and a leg... do the research before you come and you will enjoy it more without having to worry about the money.

FYI - NY is 15th most expensive place in the world.
1. Moscow 2. South Korea 3. Japan.

It will not be cheap, but if you look in the right places you can save quite a lot. That is quite a ot of things to do in one day you will be worn out if you make it through the day.

For the broadway shows you can get 50% tickets at TKTS boths, but go to the one by the south street seaport booth. Make sure to get there by 9am so that you could be close to the front of the line. Do not go to the Broadway location because there is always a few hundred people waiting in line.
There website is:

Take the staten Island ferrie it's free and you pass by the statue of liberty, one of the only free things in NYC.

For dinner there is a great italian restaurant called "Il Corallo Trattoria" 176 Prince St, all plates are between $8-$10, but they do not take reservations. Great inexpensive Italian food.

There are some combo packages available through the GrayLine site seeing tours double decker buses and that will get you around the city easily to do all those things you want, because you can get on or off the bus as you please.

On the safe side I would say a few hundred dollars. That includes lunch and supper.

It would help if your father or grand father was a banker. It will not be cheap.

Ask around.
