Personally, I wouldn't stay somewhere that high up, the furthest I have stayed is 63rd and that was quite far enough. Whilst it will be easy enough to get around on the subway during the day, I'm not sure what it's like using it at night - during the day I felt perfectly safe travelling around as a lone woman. A friend and I stayed further down on Lexington last year, we were at 51st - it was a great area and always busy. On our next trip we stayed on 8th Avenue at 46th street which was a fantastic location, we could walk most places, really close to Times Square, the cinema and there was a subway close by.
My husband and I are going again in November and are looking around the same area, at the moment we've got a hotel booked on Broadway and 52nd but may change it to something else as it's quite expensive!
If you want some serious shopping, you can get the bus to Woodbury Common Premium Outlet, the bus leaves from the Port Authority and takes about an hour. You can also get to Jersey Gardens, I haven't been there but am going to check it out in November.
Have a great trip!

Just a little north of that location is Spanish Harlem and just northwest is Harlem. So you can take that as you want. You might want to try something around the theatre district or the west side under 60th Columbus circle.
There are plenty of good restaurants and bars around 96th and Lexington or 3rd. For work you should be alright, but you will want to be careful late night.
You can take the train from there and go south on a 10 minute subway ride and you will be at Grand Central Station. Central Park is due west a few avenues away.
Also on 117th and 1st you have the Original Patsy's Pizza which is great NYC pizza and one of the original NYC pizza, later his nephew started Grimaldi's Pizza that is located at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn.

Lexington runs along Manhattan. Manhattan can be grouped into shady and safe areas. For the most part I prefer downtown( you'll be uptown). Manhattan isn't very dangerous and the crime rate has dropped drastically in the last decade. If you are on 101st St. you are not in the safest or most bustling part of the city. The area is very rich in the amount of ethnic diversity and there are a lot of ethnic clubs and resturants. Luckily, NYC has one of the best public transportation system. It's very easy to go from there to midtown. It takes about 15 minutes from where you will be on the 6 train. Every part of Manhattan is accessible either through the subway system or the buses. You can get from any part of Manhattan to another-it's the other boroughs you have worry about! Don't worry about it. Have a wonderful time!

as a frequent visitor to NYC, Lexington Ave is really not that bad, as with every large city if you look for trouble you will find it, no matter what part of town you are in.
NY had a bad rap but it was cleaned up and quite frankly I feel as safe if not safer there than anywhere else, specially since 9-11.
You will be about 4 city blocks from Broadway. It is a nice walk, lots of shop every where, delis, restaurants, bars anything you wish.
It is said that if you stand on a street corner in lower Manhattan for any lenght of time you will meet some famous people. True or false, I don't know, I have not met any.
I would say go, and have fun. take the normal precautions, as I stated before, if you look for trouble you will find it.

I used to live in NYC, New York is very safe now compared to 10-20 years ago. Of course use your common sense as you would wherever you live now. Lexington Ave. is safe area, it is a very long street. You will be in Manhattan so it is just a short to trip via the subway or bus to the main shopping streets. 101st-102nd is way up on the East Side, there won't be much to do in your immediate surroundings but all you're going to do there is sleep, so....

102nd Street and Lexington Avenue is Spanish Harlem. During the daytime it's safe. At night be careful.

That is not the greatest area -- and not much to do at night....it is also nowhere near Broadway it is 9 long crosstown blocks and is on the other side of Central Park I would ignore anything that person said as they obviously have no idea what they are talking about. That location is pretty far away from most attractions and shopping

That's pretty close to Barenys, Bergdorf, and Bendel I believe. Lexington's also really ritzy according to some people who've been around there. I prefer the Times Square (Midtown), but whatevs.

It's uptown Manhatten. Lexington Avenue runs almost the length of Manhatten. It's fine.

Sure, if by "303" you mean the address, then that's a very nice area of Midtown called Murray Hill.
