FIV Feline AIDS Virus
If you have read the Cat Diaries then you will know by now that both Ban and Jack have contracted FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is commonly known as the feline AIDS virus. This page has information about the virus in an attempt to promote awareness and help others who may own infected animals.
The information on this page has been compiled from information given to me by my Vet from a veterinary information pack, and is medical fact not internet heresay.

AIDS is a human disease from HIV Human Immuno Virus.
Cats get FIV which is Feline Immuno Virus, which is NOT part of the human version, it's strictly a cat version and is not identical except in that it tears down the immune system. The HIV and FIV are two different diseases, they can't use the same research for one to help research the other.
So no, not AIDS, but FIV.
Most FIV cats live nearly full term lives, but when the disease does start into stage 3 you dont' get much more time with them.

Cats do get aids but it is a different aids than humans get and their aids is not contageious to humans. Cats get Feline Aids, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). It is a viral disease that is potentially fatal because it interferes with the immune system of a cat. There is a vaccine for but some cats have still gotten it even though they were vaccinated. A vaccine does help prevent them from getting it though.

Yes, there is cat aids (FIV). This is a totally different virus than the human aids (HIV). It is not transmitted between cats and humans. Humans don't get cat aids and cats don't get human aids. But cat aids is quite common and lethal for cats, although they can live a few years with it. It is sexually transmitted or by blood (in cat fights, eg). That is one of the reasons why cats must be neutered. The same goes for leuchemia in cats, it is also caused by a virus.

Yes - its more commonly knows as feline lukemia though - but as it attacks the cats immune system in the same way as AIDs attacks a humans it was often called that when first discovered! It is one of the innoculations cats usually have these days!

Cats can get a form of HIV called FIV, so yes it is possible for a cat to die from AIDS, but it's not the same virus as the human one.

Well its not the human version of aids its Feline Inmunnodificiency Virus. Its a cat version of the human HIV. Its very contagious to other cats just like HIV and its fatal. Most cats get it from fighting/mating. So always get your cat spayed/neutered.

Feline Immune Deficiency Virus (FIV). It is not the same strain of aids as humans get. It is only in felines and produces aids like symptoms.
It is preventable with a vaccine.
