it is a garter, it use to be for holding the stocking in place but now its just for show.
The saying is ... something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue
old is usually jewellery
new is the dress
borrowed could be earrings
blue is the garter as it cant be seen & doesnt change the overall colour scheme something

Garters were orginally used to hold up the stockings because elastic hadn't been invented yet. The reason it was thrown is that it was thought that since the bride was such a good woman the man who caught the garter would get some of her personality and would also be able to find a good woman.

The ladies were supposed to sleep with a piece of grooms cake under their pillow. It evolved to catching the boquet because...well, sleeping with cake under the pillow usually stains the sheets.

Something blue is because blue was thought to represent fidelity and purity. Brides started making their garters blue because it was an easy way to have their blue without breaking up the all-white look that became popular after queen elizabeth wore a white wedding dress.

It is called a garter. It was used at one time to hold her stockings up before control top panty hose. Not sure about the blue part, except maybe because the "something blue" doesn't fit in the wedding color scheme, so it is best hidden. Not sure when the tradition of the groom yanking it off and throwing it came from. I think it is a stupid thing to do, especially when the groom uses his mouth to take it off in front of everyone. No one gets embarrassed anymore.

It's called a garter and in days gone by they kept stockings in place. I dont know how it became a tradition for brides to wear them or why they have become the 'something blue' for many brides.

It is a garter and it was used to hold up the bride's stockings. Taking it off signifies getting ready for sex. Throwing it away just means she isn't going to need it anymore since she is now a possession of her husband's. The mouth thing is new. Saying "it's still blue" is a reference to the bride's virginity supposedly being intact since the garter hasn't been stained.
