Every cat has it's own nature. Some species of cats are more loving and some are more damanding and some, are even more aggressive and territorial. Most cats though, can be trained out of their bad behavorial skills with patience. There is a ton of information on the web for behavioral situations and some even include pin pointing them directly to a particular breed of cat. I suggest you do some research to see how your cat lines up with other cats of his own breed and then go from there. Have you had your cat since he was a baby? If not, he may have been abused as a kitten someplace else. Another good reason cats act up is due to smell. A cat has 2 sets of noses, one you see on their face and a hidden set under their upper lip. They open their mouth when they want to really sniff something. If your cat has had a bad encounter, for example with a dog and a friend comes over who has a dog, it could trigger a response in your cat to attack. I suggest you do your homework for your kitty's sake. There is a good reason for his or her behavior. Maybe you don't think so, but they do and you need to explore the reasons behind it. Until you find out, when people come over that upset your kitty, have a safe place for kitty to go like his own room and ask the friends to stay away from your cat and not even acknowledge it. This way your cat can investigate your friend on his own or avoid them if he so chooses to do so. Cats stress easily and its best not to stress them to the point of being mean. If he/she is not fixed, that is also a good reason why they are mean, especially if he is a male because a male will get mean if he smells another male in his territory even if that smell is on a person who own the other male cat. Hope that helps.

He's most likely attacking because he's afraid. Something is triggering this in him and it's causing him to panic. Maybe he was stepped on or kicked by a stranger, or views strangers as hostile to him, I wouldn't consider it the cat's fault, he's only trying to protect himself.

Can he be put into another room when someone new comes over? Keeping him separated seems the best way to help him stay calm and feeling safe. Discipline isn't going to work if he's got an actual fear basis for what he's doing.

Some cats are just not social. My mum's tortie loves to be petted by anyone but never picked up, her 14yr old black cat loves to be gently cuddled, the warmth helps her arthitritis. Warn newcomers and give them a teat tabby likes. Treats are the best way to let a cat know it's ok to trust someone.

From everything i've read, and based on when i got my kitty.. they develop their sociall skills from their mom. When you take them away too early, you basically become their new 'mom' they pretty well become a one person cat.

perhaps your cat was taken away too soon, or could of had a bad expierence that you're unware of.. .. . . my aunts cat was the same, tore strips on my skin when i tried picking her up when i was little because my cousin was always mean to her.
As she got older she came around to people.. as long as it was her way and comfortable.
best of luck

some cats are just nervous and unfriendly towards strangers. if you know someone new is coming over you should keep your cat in one room, so he doesnt hurt anyone. you can gradually introduce your cat to people. hold your cat and tell the person he is a bit unfriendly, so they cant pet him or play with him. take it from there.

Some cats are like that.
My cousin's cat, Kiki, absolutely loves her one owner, but no one else. Go near her and she'll smack you with her de-clawed front paws, and hiss.

He has some sort of insecurity. Maybe he thinks you're going to give him away or maybe he doesn't like the attention you are giving the visitors.
