If your tonsils have not caused you significant problems for 38 years, they probably won't give you any significant problems later in life. Actually, your tonsils do atrophy as you get older (get smaller) which decreases the chance of them causing any problems.
A tonsillectomy is a pretty major surgery at your age, therefore, I would recommend keeping them, as long as they don't bother you too much.

I'm 38 and also still have my tonsils. Aside from getting more sore throats than usual, it doesn't seem to be a problem for me.

I'm 35 and still have mine. However, one more bout with tonsilitis or strep throat, they will be removed.

i don't really think so. i'm 23 and i still have mine. if it's not broke don't fix it. i guess there's always a possibility that you'll have toubles with sleep apnea or tonsilitis but you'll just have to cross that bridge when you come to it. these days they won't just give you that surgery unless they think it's absolutely necessary.
