I'd show them the dynamics and value of joining up with the Supply side. Downside: prison and potential homicide, poor medical coverage. Upside: Financial gain, limiting brain damage, clear complexion, improved hygiene, and stock options.

If he's been doing this since Nam, why not just suggest that he going in for a thorough check up. Chances are his overall health is suffering aside from the fact that he's destroying his brain and his ability to express emotions properly.

Suggest a Primary Care Physician, not a VA Doc.
( No offense VA Docs, but drug addictions are curable and there is no excuse for excusing them because of what the patient has had to go through.)

He's lucky he has a friend like you who knows how to be discreet. It could cause him much trouble and even some harm if someone were to just blab about such a personal matter to the whole world.

If I wanted to stop someone from smoking drugs, I'd make some hash brownies.

It stopped being an issue for me awhile back. I'm sitting here looking at 8 prescription bottles and thinking that there's not much room for optionals.

I still have one beer a month. Of course, being of Irish-German ancestry a pitcher counts as one beer, but unless someone offers me a toke that's about it.

Ya gotta want it, DFA. Find something that gives your life value in your own eyes and fight for that.

No point in trying to convince anyone to stop drugs. If your friend has been doing it since Vietnam, he is WELL aware of his problem, WELL aware of any arguments concerning how what he is doing is wrong and hurting him, and he has chosen to disregard that information.

You CANNOT make someone stop drugs, or anything else they are addicted to. Nobody can do that except the addict themselves, when and if they ever decide to stop. THAT is when they will stop, and not before, no matter who says what to them.

seven six two, just missing my head
hundred twenty grains of copper and lead
air split and slashed screams and wails
how far off this one ? how close was hell ?
Doppler is the piper, he has taught me well...
and his first name... Christian...
he discovered the secret of anthem of hell
a song sung by wave compression and stretch
between high and low pitch a delicate balance,
the bullet with your name will arrive in silence.
you will not hear that one, just the light will dim
as physics decreed in a fit of kindness,
only gathering darkness and then infinite lightness...
AK in distance stutters, an initial barked chord,
now it is only a matter of time,
there soon will be others and incoming eight-one
Simonov, Kalashnikov,
Tokarev, and Makarov
always first words in the song of war,
names which come to hunt me from a land too far,
I look up at the heavens, pray, and clutch my CAR
I jump to my feet and I catch my breath
I have been invited to tango with death...

war... diplomacy by other means...
the first casualty of war ? the truth...
I appreciate your kind advice, alas, it is too late...
I have noticed a certain aloofness and a theoretical
distance in your pearls of wisdom... we never want to confront that which makes us uncomfortable... it is... dirty... isn't it...
so, good night, sweet princess and prince
dream dreams of righteousness and do not wince
you are correct, as the day is bright,
me and my Kimber bid you final good night...

I don't know how to "smoke" drugs. I thought they were usually mainlined. Unless you mean tobacco, but I didn't think that was a drug. Unless you mean grass? A drug? Hah! That's like calling autoeroticism a drug. It isn't a drug. Or is it?
