I am in New York only for 1 night and wondering what the must sees are there as i'm there for such a short period of time. Also which is a better building to see NY from a height, the rockefeller centre (top of the rock) or the empire state building, which gives the best views?

Have to go to the Empire State Building at night, the view on a clear night is spectacular then take a horse-drawn carriage around the sites, very romantic and beautiful.

Both aren't open at all times. If you plan to go to the ESB, I suggest you wake up very early! The line can be chaotic! Both areas have great attractions on the surrounding areas. There's also been talk abou ESB being closed to the public while the top of the rock is a fairly new attraction so I'd go to the ESB.
If you are in NY for one night, I suggest you go on this very inexpensive one hour tour of the entire island of Manhattan (really the only part you need to visit while visiting the City of New York). I've been on it a few times (schools take students on them) the best is the Circle Line tours. You get to see old NY, Modern NY, and everything in between! Have a good time!

Empire State Building is a better view. The Rainbow Room at the top of the rock offers fine dining which is quiet enjoyable if you want to gaze outside. For the Empire State Building it's only open at certain hours.

Well, the Empire State Building is the best view since it's a skyscraper and the tallest building in NYC. The Rockefeller Center is shorter than the Empire state building.

I lived in New York City for 4 years. Definitely the view from the Empire State Building is best.
If you have one night, damn, that's a hard one.....go on the night loop on the NY hop on hop off sightseeing bus to get the most sights in the short time you have there.
