If you're travelling to Dover by car, its best to take the motorway route - if you do the A roads through all the coastal towns it will take you hours - its a 3 - 4 hour trip on the motorway. If you travel by train then I expect you'll have to go to London first, then change for Dover.

Take the train from Portsmouth to Dover, then swap to the Eurostar to Calais. Better still why not try the Ferry?
