they are good cars, most of the story's you hear about them are from people who have bought them used with a lot of miles on them, and some of them when the mileage gets real high will give problems, but so will any other car made also,so yes if you a nice one there alright cars,we drove one for about 5 years and it was a real good car, cheap on gas also, just have it checked out before you buy it,good luck with it.

not sure which consumer report he is using, or the age of the car you are looking at. for 2000 cavaliers have been practically maintance free vehicles. As my cousin is a mechanic as well as my husband. They work on all makes and models, and rarely find a problem other than change oil and filter in cavaliers. I have found 2.4 peppy little engines to give great power with little problems. same a my saturn. Wow that had power. Every now and then you can find a lemon. Hope you get enough answers here to be able to sway your decision. You can also get the vin # and go to carfax.com should give you all info on it. If you are buying from a garage get the name and # of previous owner and call them. If you are buying new. congradulations. I really think if you like the test drive you will like the car.

The worst rated car by Consumer Reports in ages. They don't hold up well at all. The 2.4 liter lump in the z24 is not too bad but is about the only part of the car that holds up at all.

Overall they are a fine cars. Nothing overly groundbreaking about them but they will last if you take car of them. My family had a used Cavalier and it ran fine and did what we needed it to do. I think you would be making a good choice.
