if i have a 5.1 ch speaker system and i bought a 7.1 ch receiver, can it still output in 5.1?
sorry if the question sounded silly i dont know much about this stuff

Yes,you can use a 7.1 Receiver with your 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers. If you are not going to buy more speakers i would purchase a 5.1 Receiver, which may even perform better than a 7.1 because there is less processing in favour of better sound quality which is more important than extra channels. And no, your question is not silly .Many people are not sure what to do in your situation.At least you have asked for advice.

There should be a menu setting on the DVD player or TV (not the receiver, itself) that will broadcast the signal for 5.1.

Yes it will hook up no problem and you will still get great 5.1 sound
