Check out the guides over @ tire rack .com(below).
Good luck and be safe out there on the road!

Once you start seeing the steel belting coming through the rubber is a pretty good indication that you need new tires. When I was younger I drove with these tires all the way until I started seeing nylon. HAHA. That is when it is absolutely time to get new tires!!!

when the tread is even with the raised marks in the grooves of the tire. Or you can take a penny and stick it upside down in the tread and if you can see the top of Abe's head it's time for new rubber...

I can look at mine and tell but you can run it by any Auto shop and they have a measuring gauge that they place on the tire and if it doesn't meet that certain level on that measuring gauge they need changing. In our State if they don't meet that level your car won't pass inspection.
Yeah I like the see Abe's Head You need newTread! Good Way to Remember.

When the air is showing through!
Seriously, when the tread is even with the wear bars, or less than 2/32 of an inch left of the treads.

There's a horizontal line of rubber on you tire. When the tire wears down to the height of the line is when you need new tires.

When a mechanic inspects your car for the Motor Vehicle Inspection, he has a guage he uses to measure the depth of the tread m using the space between the treads. If it's not enough tread, he'll fail the inspection.

when your tires start skidding on a dry road or when you start to spin out on the snow.
or the easiest way is to get a penny and stick it in the treads if it goes less than a quarter way in you need new tires.
