Yes, it's good to thank the interviewer for their time and who knows the person they hired may not work out... So, they might remember you going the extra step.. Good luck

What an interesting concept! Frankly, I'm more than familiar with and have sent a fair number of thank you's after being interviewed for a position, however; I have never thought about sending a note after being turned down! It's a really good idea if you feel that there is still some chance that another position may become available for which you may be better suited. I like the concept very much so go for it -- I don't think it breaks any protocol and the initiative may actually impress the employer on another level. There is also the chance that the person chosen won't work out and you would be in a great position to have your application reconsidered! Kudos for thinking outside the box! I don't know if you could call it a 'thank you' note though. Perhaps an "I appreciated the opportunity to interview for the position" kind of tone. Lots of luck in the future -- I think you're on to something!

Yes, I write the thank you note even if I didn't get the job. You never know if the other person is going to work out or not, and the company might end up going through other applications to find someone else to fill the job if the first person didn't work out. Writing a thank-you note helps you stand out in the interviewer's mind.
