You can try to request an assignment. Once you're in and assigned to your reception battalion, talk to the USAREC office. It's possible but you're not guaranteed anything, and you will have no chance of knowing before you sign the papers. The only way to find out is to sign up, and once you do that there's no turning back.

That's what myself and a few friends did and they worked it out. We didn't really care either way, whether we got it or not. We still enlisted. Just bear in mind it doesn't mean you'll always be in that place. They can put you wherever they need you, and even if they did grant you a first choice they might not follow through on it.

If you're doing it because you think Afghanistan is a walk in the park... heh... good luck. You're joining for the wrong reasons and you're in for a big surprise.

They closest they have had to that is when they used to have a "wish list" where you could list your top 3 places you'd like to be stationed. But now they still give you the wish list but it rarely matters because they send you where they need you.

When you go to MEPs you can talk to your liaison and tell them you would like to enlist into a already mobile unit and "request" Afghanistan, but like others and myself have said, they send you where they need you. You can enlist with a mobile unit and hope for Afghan, but nothing is guaranteed unless you see it with your own eyes in black and white on your contract as you sign it AND ACTUALLY READ IT. There is no rushing paperwork that decides what could be the rest or the end of your life.

If your married or have kids, I would HIGHLY recommend you try it as a civilian. My sister's husband is over in Iraq right now while she is alone with 2 kids, 4 yr old and 7 month old, and she is going thru such a emotional struggle it made me decide not to re-enlist. I couldn't bare to put my wife thru any more.

Good luck

It would not make any difference. Your recruiter has no control over where you will be stationed once your basic training is completed. When my daughters went through (AF & Army), they were allowed to choose five different places that they wanted to go to. Sometimes they got to go where they wanted to the most; and other times they did not and had to wait a few years before they did. And then there some people who are sent over to there right after their training. It just depends on where and when they want to send you.

You have no choice over your assignment once you enlist. If you want to go to Afghanistan, you would have to enlist with the Canadian Armed Forces, as they are in Afghanistan and not Iraq.

You sign the paper and you become the "property of the United States Goverment" son.

They can DO WHAT THEY WANT WITH YOU. And they will.

They don't bargain, period.

They may say alot of nice things and may show you pictures of nice military condo's and serene military bases, but the above still stands.

Any questions?

One thing, If you want to shape up and you can't do it on your own, the military will do that for you if you apply yourself.

My son is active miltary.

Good Luck

No, you go where your unit gets sent. you sign away your right to a choice when you sign the contract.

absolutely NONE whatsoever. you go where your command sends you. you don't get to negotiate anything other than your initial training after Basic.
