A hat is always a good protection for your head. In the army when you enter a mess hall out of respect and rules you have to take your hat off.
If you have very little hair at the back of your head a yamalka comes in very handy.
At one time poor people could not afford hats. It became a status symbol to wear a hat.
So the person who wore the hat expected respect.
Catholic Clergy wear yamalkas, perhaps its because Biblical Judaism a Catholiscism have common cultural ideas.
After all ;The first Christians were all Jewish. And Gentiles became greatfull for the Jewish preachers of the Gospel of Salvation to an Ungodlly world.

Tradition.
The skullcap worn by the Catholic clergy is called a zucchetto.
All Catholic clergy are entitled to wear the zucchetto.
+ The Pope's zucchetto is white
+ Cardinals are red
+ Bishops are purple
+ Priests and deacons are black
Some think that Zucchettos go back to when clerics shaved the center of their heads into a tonsure. Zucchettos would help keep thier heads warm.
