Yes...very. It's a fear of the unknown and not just academically....everything will change and be different.

I differ with most of the prior postings. My grandson is 13. He is in a Vanguard program at school and has been since he entered 2nd grade. His academics are being tracked by Duke University and will have a large bearing upon his acceptance to that university. So, if your bff is also in a special academic program, then I think it is probably understandable why she is "freaking" about college. These tracking programs are not like silent observers...they actively involve themselves in the child's academic as well as extracurricular activities, as well as suggesting summer learning experiences (my grandson has worked the last three summers at SeaWorld). Considering what a stellar opportunity this is for a gifted child, I would say your friend is exhibiting normal and thoughtful behavior.

Freaking out about college? She's only 12 years old. Colleges really start to look at grades when you enter high school, that's when grades majorly start to count. She is going to be in 6th grade next year I imagine, tell her to calm down she has 4 or 5 five years until she has to majorly worry about college. If she keeps up her good grades she has nothing to worry about because she will defianatley get into a good college. Tell her to enjoy her youth while she still can and don't worry about the future which is so far away.

Everyone reacts differently to fears and expectations about college. She may be feeling pressure from her parents even at a young age to have the best scores possible. Over the years she'll probably have times that she's more uptight about it and times that she's more relaxed about it. I would say it's not 'normal' at that age, but it's also not unheard of.

No, if she's 12 it doesn't matter. If she is trying to get into a good private high school it will matter, but not too much. Grades and activities from High School are what matter for College.

This sounds like performance anxiety and it can be common in high achievers. But is there pressure being put on her by her parents or teachers?
