God knew Jesus from before the foundation of the world. So God saw things before they happened, and made judgements about them, and He knew Jesus from before the Earth even happened.

So Jesus was born in the 4 BC area of history. How did God know Jesus then? I think that it means that Jesus was present, perhaps not as we call Him Jesus, but because He is the Word of God as the Bible states that He is:
John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

So axiomatically we can see that if these verses state the truth, the Word is Jesus, he is linked to mankind as He created mankind, and that He existed before the worlds were formed.
