I'm just curious about this topic. When I tell anecdotes I tend to always tell about the negative things about myself because I find that people are more interested in others misfortunes, over successes. For instance, if I was to tell someone a story I would tell them a story about how I lost money at a casino rather than finding 20 bucks on the street.

What do you guys think about this? Is it a bad thing to focus on the negative aspects? I don't suffer from low self-esteem, I just find it comical to laugh at myself at times.

I do the same thing sometimes, not because they're negative but because they are funny. I don't keep company with people that enjoy others misfortunes. But definitely be wary of only telling negative stories, people may misunderstand your humor and think you a fool.

Only certain people enjoy negative stories more than positive ones. Some people like hearing about others' misfortunes.

I think people in general like positive anecdotes and the best thing for you would be to convert your misfortunes into good lessons of life.

If the anecdote is humorous without being offensive to listeners - what more could anyone ask?

Self-deprecation seldom falls flat. Think of the Groucho Marx quote: I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.

My anecdotes have to stress the negative. Only ones that apply to me.
