The only thing that comes to mind is the high pressure pump and the IPR valve. The IPR valves on those particular model years are known to leak due to the o-rings coming apart, or the high pressure pump bodies internal seal. Go to your local Ford dealer parts department ask for basic part numbers 9C968, and 9A543 to get the parts you need.

7.3 Liter powerstrokes are kinda notorious oil leakers on the top end, you will need to get it cleaned off, grab a small flashlight, preferred a bendable one and a small mechanics mirror. The first place you want to look is around the high pressure oil pump towards the front of the lifter valley, check the output hose fittings and the IPR actuator for leaks. Both of these are easy to repair with a few O-rings available from your Ford or International dealer. Next check the plug that is inserted into the end of the high pressure pump and held in with a C-clip, if it is leaking the only way to repair it is to replace the pump. If those are OK check the plugs that are inserted along the heads that seal the oil gallery, there 3 in the right head and 2 in the left since the ICP sensor will be in the other hole. Check the ICP sensor and the high pressure hose fittings at the head also. If those are good check out the exhaust back pressure control valve under the turbocharger, if it is leaking it will leak around the rod that goes from the turbo pedestal to the exhaust back pressure valve in the pipe just down stream from the turbo, there is a kit available from Ford to repair this. The last good possibility are the O-rings between the block and the turbo pedestal or between the pedestal and the turbo assemble leaking, or a cracked pedestal or turbo housing, all of these are high pressure systems and will leak quite fast except for the back pressure actuator, it will only leak when the engine is cold.

Hmmmmmmmmm a 97. All of the above answers are good. But I can't remember if that year has an intercooler yet. If it does, another thing that happens on these is blow by. If you get too much blow by that will make oil vapors go into the intake system and then the oil will puddle inside the tubes going to the intercooler right at the rubber connectors. The oil will then actually seep out of the connector, fill up the valley and leak down the back of the engine. I have seen it many times on the newer trucks (1999, 2000). But I am not sure if your year truck has an intercooler on it because I have not worked on that old of one.

i agree. check you high preasure oil pump. as a matter of fact, when you get several miles on one of those its kinda like regular maintance. with out it you wont go any where because its got to hold so many lbs of preasure for the fuel injectors to work. not a cheap replacement so make sure befor doing any thing

couple of things come to mind, it could be a valve cover gasket, not likely, could be and intake gasket or bolt for the intake, maybe, or it could be the o-ring for the fuel pump. clean it all off with carb cleaner, make sure its all nice and dry and then run it and sit and watch, kinda like watching water boil but someones got to do it and I have been there before, many a time
