She just started getting weepy sores on the inside of her lips. When I checked inside her mouth I noticed inflamed sores on one side of her mouth and now they are spreading to the other side. What would cause this?

If it's the herpes virus, you can treat that at home with 250mg to 500mg of lysine (crush the pill & put it over the food, this is a cat dose). Our FIV males need this to keep the herpes virus in them dormant.

Ask the vet if it could be stomatitis (stoma TIE tis), there are different treatments for that.

Has your cat been around any caustic (acid type) liquids or chewed on any batteries? Has the mouth been burned from chewing on electical cords? Did he eat splintered chicken bones and rip up the mouth enough for sores that way?

There's a lot of things that could cause this, and the vet needs to eliminate the ones he/she knows it isn't, so they can treat what they think it might be.

Feline herpesvirus more then likely. It's a pain in the butt. Your vet will probably put her on a broad spectrum antibiotic to prevent the sores getting infected. It is a virus, so the antibiotic doesn't help that in particular, but, those sores can get really infected and the antibiotic is to help prevent that. You can expect anywhere from 10 days to 6 weeks of dealing with that. Though, it could be something worse like stomatitis. But, they do look rather different, so your vet should be able to tell.

Could be herpes or calici virus. Could even be cancer.

Does she wear a flea collar? They are known to cause sores, even cancer, in cats' mouths.

Whatever it is, it is serious and I'm sure it is very painful to the cat. You should take her to a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment.
