Only in some equations. For example, if 2A = 4, then A ≠ 1.

If you are referring to the place of the letter A in the alphabet, I can accept that. It may be different in other languages than English though.

why not? There would be no point in making it 0 as it is acually a number, but you can't make it 2 because it isn't the second letter. Therefore, it must be 1.
