Not necessarily.
If the depression is just starting, you can use mind over matter.
Think positive. You have to force yourself to be positive. Taking anti depressants sometimes don't make a bleep on the rector scale.
But if you are already a wreck. Take your pills, it could get worse.......do you rock back and forth, when they aren't taken?
Some make you zombie like.
Exercise, watch your diet....foods have a lot to do with your chemistry.......
Sometimes you don't need an anti-depressant, but all you need is a seductive.
Are sometimes all you need is just good old regular sleep. A full night's sleep works wonders.
But don't sleep during the day, or when you're not suppose to. This adds to depression.................been there done that.
When you feel it coming on. Force your self, begin jumping up and down and singing a crazy happy song!! or Saying I"m Happy , I'm happy....it works.
You'll feel foolish, dumb, but it brings your behind back into the present!! Trust me.
I have yellow happy faces all over the place. You can't help but to think for a millisecond of goodness and gaiety.
I also have one blue happy face and I find myself saying "what the hell you looking at" it works, dude it works!

This depends on the level of depression. Medium to severe depression does need to be treated or can get worse, this is after-all a mental illness. However, to determine the level of depression a visit to the Doctor is a must.
He/She will be able to diagnose the level and prescribe (if needed) medication, which should take a few weeks to start working and lift the depression. Please note, it may take a few times to get the right tablet to work for you, that agrees with you.
Im 25 and when I started to feel depressed I went to the local library and got out some books. I diagnosed myself as having severe depression as I could completely relate to the symptoms that matched this. However I still booked an appointment to see my Doctor and Health Visitor....I was diagnosed as having severe depression and was given tablets, which luckily do agree with me, I am now better and dont struggle to get out of bed or wish I wasnt here. I still have down days now and then, but this is normal, I just remind myself that it is an illness and it shouldnt have a stigma attached to it.
I also told my friends and family that I was suffering from depression, this helped me.
Some extra advice is to get active, go for walks, go swimming, meet with friends and family..... Try and get out of the house as much as possible, even if you have to push yourself, it may not seem like it at the time, but these things do help also.
Your question doesnt specifically say thats its you who is possibly suffering, however if it is Good Luck and please take my advise.....or pass it on.....
Please feel free to email me if you want to talk or need a little support -

There have been some excellent answers so far and there's not much I can add. I've had depression a couple of times and couldn't take antidepressants because I take anticonvulsants for epilepsy. The last time, I ended up seeing a cognitive behavioural therapist and this worked for me. Anyway, to answer your question directly, it won't necessarily get worse. Bye the way, I've found out that certain foods that contain Typtophan are good mood lifters.
(This was taken from the link below.) "Tryptophan, found as a component of dietary protein, is particularly plentiful[2] in chocolate, oats, bananas, dried dates, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, fish, poultry, sesame, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, spirulina and peanuts. It is found in turkey at a level typical of poultry in general."
If you resort to chocolate - try to stick to the plain variety.
Best of luck.

Nope...been there and bought the t-shirt, refused medication.
I firmly believe that if you KNOW you have depression, you are OK, its when you do not know, that's when you have a problem!
Lots of rest, sleep, and get out of the house, meet people, nice long walks in the sunshine and good food, helps no end, a good friend to talk to, if not see your GP and get some counselling, it does help, trust me!
Hopefully its just a thing you are going through, there is an end to it, unlike some, so be glad eh. Just hang in there!
The power of POSITIVE thought helps all the way, get some books from the library, take up some interests, avoid what you THINK is causing the problem, or CHANGE it. Some times easier then said I know. I have to WANT to get better, and then you WILL.
Good luck x

I think it depends as to the reason why you are depressed. For example if you are depressed owing to losing your job and then you get another job then the depression may lift or say if you had a row with your partner and then you made up then again it may lift.
BUT if you are clinically depressed then usually you need some kind of help. That can be with counselling and / or medication too.
I should also point out that ante-depressants can be very successful in treating depression.
I would suggest that if you are feeling depressed then it is worth seeing your GP and letting him/her assess you.
IF you are clinically depressed and seek no help then it could get worse and you may end up feeling suicidal.

What the bloody hell is Super glitch on about ?
She's never suffered from depression ,she's just sticking her nose in.
I suffer from depression and believe me ,when you're in one of your down periods then there is no such thing as positive thought.
Come off it will you, though i do believe that a healthy diet can help but again while your really down ,can you really be bothered.
So to answer your question ,you may not nescessarily get worse or better.
There are millions of people who don't even realise that they are depressed,it's only when someone says you may be then they start thinking about it .

Glad you ask, speaking from experience from someone who is taking anti depressants. Yes, I do believe, it is only going to get worse.
Let me just say, for me. It helped me so much. I am sleeping better and watching my diet. I think more positive, thoughts then I do negative thoughts.
Enjoy the rest of your day.

Some anti-depressants i.e. seroxat, can make it much worse. Unless you've got severe clinical depression, i'd steer clear of tablets and think about councilling.

You can actually get rid of depression through diet. Alot of dyes in our food, preservitives, & even things like wheat can trigger depression.
I have a friend that contacted my Naturapath Dr. and asked her about depression....she advised her to get off of all the dyes, wheat, and any preservitives. My friend started the diet on Tues and less then a week later felt like a completly new woman.

i have had depression in the past, i have been treated with pills, the dr said i may always need them when things get tough. the next time i felt depression coming on i just plodded on and eventualy things did improve. so i think that you do not always need treatment.
