Some of each, I think. Certainly there are people there who only want a captive audience for their preaching, but I also believe some are very sincere. Check out Glide Memorial Church, which is Methodist, in San Francisco. Reverend Cecil Williams is a real humanitarian, and uses the church as his vehicle, rather than the other way around. (He plays himself in the movie "Pursuit of Happyness.")

I think many are out of genuine concern, but I do see some evidence to the contrary here in Texas. Of course I fully expect them to change the name of Texas to Jesus Land, any day.

well, as they're made up of individuals, I'd say most likely it's both.
There are probably both types: the type that want to use others' misfortune as leverage to convert them, and the type that genuinely wish to be of help, regardless of the recipient's views on theism.

I think that faith based org.s are genuinely trying to help others by reason of their faith.

Its called advertising. Jim Jones opened and ran all kinds of shelters and soup kitchens before deciding that he and 900 or so of his sheep, should die.

Genuine concern with a side of God. They want to help, and by helping, they try to bring God into the lives of the people. which will help them, so.
