Possibly the replacement was new to begging and the other one was taking him around to all the places that give hand-outs.
After all, since he was going on holiday, someone had to get those freebies.

Haha! That is really stupid. Beggars don't have holidays, it is saying that beggars consider begging to be a job, so he is going on vacation from begging.
