I have a 98 cherokee. Stock suspension and ride height. Im going to purchase a set of 15X7 or 15X8 wheels and im wondering what the largest sized tire i can put on them would be. Im not going to be putting a lift on the jeep so it would have to fit the stock ride height. Can anyone help me out with this?

There is very little room under an XJ for larger tires without a lift. I don't think I'd go much bigger than a 29" tire.

Have you considered a budget boost from some place like Rusty's?

They're pretty cheap and will give you the room you need to run 30's. I wouldn't try 31's without 3" lift.

I can't help but think of two questions:

1) Why do you want oversize tires? If you're not going to go off-road with this, there really isn't any reason to change to a different size.

2) How many miles do you have on the XJ? You could consider replacing the aging stock suspension with a 2-inch lift, which will allow larger wheels.

To answer your question. The 29x9.5's will fit on stock wheels. Watch out for after market wheels that they have correct back spacing. You will have to readjust the front steering stops by 1/4" or will rub slightly at full turn. If you wish to raise it slightly, you can get 1 or 2" front coil spacers for the front, but go to a junk yard and find the rear spring brackets from a Comanche and you get 1.5" in the rear instantly.
You WILL Note increased braking effort due to larger diameter. IF and I STRESS IF, you have ABS..DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE ABS!!! you can install two trailing brake shoes in each side of the rear brakes and the pedal effort will return to stock. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE FUNCTIONING ABS or rear lock up in emergency will happen.
You also need to change you speedometer drive gear by 2 teeth less than stock. You will have to personally count how many teeth you have now and then get the new gear from Jeep.
You will notice a drop in performance due to larger tires. If you have 3:55 gears..you might notice a drop and I say MIGHT in gas mileage above 70 MPH.

the best help and advice that you can get IS >>>>>> do not jack with these swap-offs .. do not change anything or go away from the stock sizes --- if you change the tire height then you are changing the speedometer and the shifting ( if you have an automatic tranny) the factory pre-sets that are in your vehicle computer read and function off the tire rotation and the vehicle speed --- screw with that and you gas mileage will go south --- my son did what you are thinking about and the cherookoot was never the same and got lousy gas miles and we finally got rid of the vehicle when he finished university..

I'd say maybe 31's but you'll rub during extreme articulation unless you trim the fenders. Ours has 5" of lift and it rubs in the extreme cases but that said, our fenders have been trimmed quite extensively.
