Quite honestly, it seems like many christians here are in shock that atheists even exist.

If they aren't aware there are so many Atheists then they are living a sheltered life. Atheists rank third in total numbers in the USA behind Christians and Muslims. I think the last I read there are some 46 million Atheist in the USA - that's a lot. And those are just the ones who will admit it. Remember, there is still sizable persecution for atheists in this country.

Perhaps. But I've known many atheists in what you call "meat space." I used to be one, and several of my best friends are STILL atheists. In Washington State, which is where I lived for most of my life, most people are atheists or agnostic.

Yes. Atheists in the real world can face violence and discrimination from believers, so many are "in the closet." Not myself; I happen to be a vocal one who has had his own public access TV show, debated preachers in public forums including university, network TV, and library debates, published letters and articles, was president of the state organization, etc. - but I'm the exception.
As well, believers deny the existence of nonbelievers because the existence of nonbelievers threatens their faith.

Would you speak out if you were publicly persecuted by 90% of the United States?
On the Internet I don't have to worry about people coming to my door, or screaming things at me in a way that makes me feel physically threatened.
Religious people out in the real world are merciless and cruel because they know they are the majority. They are corrupt and hateful people.
