Since I transferred my allegiance from Br Telecom To Talk Talk the junk calls I receive have been cut by about 90%. They have some way of weeding out a lot of the junk calls.

If you have a BT landline and these calls are either excessive or becoming a nuisance, I believe you can complain directly to BT.
The other suggestions on here are well taking note of. Be sure, when you visit online forums, shopping sites, or general info pages, NOT to disclose your phone number. Always leave any 'call-back' boxes unchecked.
This sort of thing drives me insane. There's always some 'phone spammer' ringing up in the middle of my evening meal! ... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ...
