Why don't you try really working out and a healthy diet (i.e., just eating well, not some dumb "eat ten apples a day" sort of thing)? You seem to want a quick solution--nothing in life is quick or easy.

I have three friends right now who are on the lapband and had the procedure done in the past month. All have seen pretty significant weight loss thus far.

If you don't want to spend a huge chunk of change on the lapband you could try weight watchers which I know has worked wonders for many people. OR.. if you have the willpower and motivation, go the absolutely FREE way and start tracking your food intake and stay under a certain number of calories. At your weight, I'd say you could start eating 1700 cals a day or less and you'd shed a ton. www.thedailyplate.com can help you track what your eating and set your weight and calorie intake goals. www.sparkpeople.com is also free and if you stick to it, will help you lose a ton.

If you're wanting to motivate your daughter to lose weight, you need to show her the healthy way and change your eating and exercise habits. The lapband will help you take off weight, but it does NOT make you a healthier person.

It's all about motivation. If you don't think you can do it on your own, get the lapband. If you want to save $1300, register on one of the free sites I gave you. Good luck!

postal -

i had the gastric bypass back in june 1996. i weighed over 300 lbs and went from a size 25 to size 10 in nine months. i continued to lose weight and got down to below a size 4....but then my body reset it self and i came back up to the size i am today - which is 8/9.

i was extremely luck and do not have ANY excess skin hanging anywhere. my doctor said it was because i was so physically active even though i was overweight. the majority of people who have weight loss surgery have to have some sort of pastic surgery on stomach, arms, chin etc to remove the excess fles.

now, let me address the one answerer who stated how many people die of this procedure...this is probably true, but in a hospital environment the mortality rates is always a factor and is reviewed monthly by the hospital review mortality board.
i willsay in choosing between the gastric bypass and the lap procedure - there are people who have had the gastric bypasss who develop a symdrome called 'mal-absortion"...where the vitamins, minerals and nutrients are not absorbed by your body...thus making you extremely ill.
so make sure you discuss ALL risks with your doctos first.

also depending on how serious you are about this procedure---you can actually sabatoge it. i have know 3 other persons who actually had the gastric bypass, lost all their weight and then gained it all back plus more......you still have to watch what and how much you eat.

i am willing to discuss this with you if you would like more information.
would i ever do it again? YOU BET
was it worth it? YOU BET

i am happy with it...just be aware of the pros and cons of each --do research...I researched for over a year before i actually did it.

good luck

God help me, I don't mean to rain on your parade. but I used to work in a hospital where people would come after gastric bypass surgery to get off the ventilator. Of the 20 or so people that came to that hospital for after care, 16 died. I would highly recommend the band. It seems a lot safer. Good luck to you.

the lap band is less invasive and just as effective as gastral bypass.
