I have 4 adults cats and 3 seven week old kittens. They are all inside only and 1 is declawed. The rest DO NOT touch the furnature.
The secret is, cat scratching posts. I have 3 in my house. I bought them at wal mart for $30 each. Or sometimes people make them and sell them at the flea markets.
They work wonders trust me. I really regret having my cat declawed. If i would of bought him one before i got him declawed it would of fixed everything.
If this still doesn't work get him declawed, thats if he's inside only. Its not good to declaw outside cats, then they can't survive.
Heres the ones i have .. again, i have 3 of them.

edit: i dont get it but dont listen to idiots who say get rid of your cat. dumbest thing i've ever heard.

He has to have something he CAN scratch that won't feel like it'll fall onhim if he pulls at it, so get a sturdy scratching post for sure.
There's a double sided sticky tape on the market to protect furniture from cats. It's 2" wide and you just stick it vertically to the furniture where the cat stretches up to grab. They don't like the feel of that and go elsewhere (hopefully to the scratching post).
We had good luck with getting a 'cat tree' with 4 levels on. They all like to dig their claws into the bottom round section. They never use the roped part for scratching or the vertical wood part, they all prefer the carpet side of the lower level.

Aside from de-clawing them you could put double sided tape on the corners of your couch, chair, etc. This keeps them from scratching the corners. I have also heard the spraying Fabreeze on furniture works becuase the scent is strong to cats and they will avoid the furniture.

right, de-clawing is just cruel, would you like to have all your fingernails and toe-nails removed????
our kitty used to scratch the sofa like crazy, i bought a scratching post and covered it in catnip spray. than every time she went to scratch the sofa i sprayed her with water and showed her the scratching post, it started to work after a few attempts
my mum is having the same problem with her kitten at the moment and she got some double sided tape and stuck it on the furniture and the kitty doesnt like the feel of it as she gets her paws stuck, this soon stopped her and then you can take the tape off and problem solved,
get a couple of scratching posts and good luck

Scratching is a natural behaviour, so cats need to be trained to redirect it towards a scratching post. The web sites below offer very good advice on training your cat to stop scratching the furniture.

Please be patient, as your cat will make mistakes whilst he's learning where it's okay to scratch. I have two indoor cats and both of them have their own scratch posts that they happily use.

To discipline him/her, you can squirt your cat with a water bottle so that it tells and alerts him/her that she/he is doing something wrong. You can also buy a scratching post, but cats scratch only because it's their way of taking "possession" of something, so I'm pretty sure your cat won't always use the scratching post. The last thing you could do is taking him/her to a licensed vet and having him/her get declawed.

I have two cats and I tried everything. I was told that vinager would stop them but it didn't work for me. I ended up having to declaw mine but they are only inside cats. Don't declaw unless they NEVER go outside.
