Depends who you speak of. Most of it is predisposition, that's why some people become addicts and others don't. Alot has to do with the type of addiction, some people are self medicating there mental illness. Sex and eating are actually compulsive behaviors witch are a Little different. Also many people who suffer from addiction lack coping skills and they use whatever there addicted to to cope with there underlying issues.

Hi there is no actually cause as such but its all to do with the way we think when we first take up a habit. Say drugs for example, Most people when they start taking drugs have the attitude or totally believe that its NOT an addiction and if they want to stop they could. Atfirst this is true till their addiction has taken control over their body, and their body wether this is physcially or mentally depends of it. This is when they are addicted and find it almost imposible to quit.

I'm not a medical professional, though I've been a patient for many years, no addictions though.
My theory is that it's genetic. Some people are predisposed to addiction because of their DNA or personality type. If you are uptight, moral person like me, I get addicted to the computer, hobbies, caffiene, etc. Others in my family, though, have become addicted to not so great stuff.
So my hypothesis is that there is a genetic predisposition toward addiction, but what type of addiction depends on environment and activities (hanging with druggies, falling for wrong girl, etc. history).

I am an addiction specialist and addiction of any kind is a bio/psycho/social disease. Even "behavioral" addictions like gambling or sex are diseases. Bio meaning genetics are involved, psycho meaning the individual experiences, depression, sexual trauma, etc., and the social being friends and environment. With all addictions, your brain basically becomes re-wired to become aroused to different stiumli. A metaphor I use with my patients who are struggling to accept it as a disease or self will weakness...imagine I give you a bottle full of exlax and tell you to drink it and go stand in the corner. You first ask me to use the restroom and I say no. You wait, and you say you really have to go and ask to use the rest room and I say "just will it away." Thats basically the effectiveness of will power on addiction. Roughly 75-95% of the population who drink, gamble, have sex, take medications (as prescribed) will have no problems with addiction. The other %, most likely had some form of problems in the bio/psycho/social area that made them acceptable to the disease.

I don't know but I do know one feeds the other like alcohol becomes into drugs and then sex. Like me I used to be hooked on alcohol I still drink but not anywhere near as much as I used too then I used to do alot of marijuana but now I drink a lot of caffeine and don't do drugs. Maybe its a mental thing you feel like you have to medicate yourself instead of going to see a therapist. Maybe you want to drown out memories which is what I did. My parents divorced when I was 18 and my dad and I moved to another state he got remmarried and I moved away from all of my family and friends so what did I do? I turned to alcohol and I felt great but I got into alot of trouble with the law. instead of going to seek help I turned to the bottle and bottled up alot of emotions and went on a big downhill spiral. I am doing much better today I am 29 and on top of the world!
