I agree. We will win every tactical engagement, but we will not suppress the insurgency nor will we be able to control an escalating civil war. In the end, we will leave with some catchy slogan like Richard Nixon's, "peace with honor."
"Good evening. I have asked for this radio and television time tonight for the purpose of announcing that we today have concluded an agreement to end the war and bring peace with honor in Vietnam and in Southeast Asia."
Naturally there are nuances to both the geography and the people. Furthermore, VN saw ten times the U.S. casualties. However, from our point of view, the similarities far outweigh the differences and in the end, we will depart, sadly, after having lost a brigade equivalent of dead and a division equivalent of wounded.
Our prestige in the world is diminished and questions will swirl for years to come as to why we did not complete the good fight in Afghanistan just so a prince could extract a bit of vengeance from his father's enemy. It is an age old story. I just did not think that a personal vendetta could take a democracy into such an unwinnable war.
Regards.

In both counties we stepped into a civil war, and both times we should have read the hand writing on the wall. The French were fighting in Nam for many years and could not declare victory, but never the less we forged ahead into a civil war. Not only was it a civil war, the Vietnamese could never make up their minds who's side they were on. Those that were the die hards to this day still say that we could and should have stayed the course, but those were mostly the chicken hawks like the likes of George W Bush and Dick Cheney, now that brings us to Iraq. Now some thirty years later we still the same chickens hawks Bush and Cheney that want to stay the course in another country's civil war, not knowing who is really on our side, wasting the life's, limbs and treasure of our country. Have not any of these chicken hawks ever read Lawrence of Arabia or the history of France in Indo China

Nam Vet first let me offer my deepest since respect to you for your service to our country. That being said you are quite correct our politically leadership has dragged us straight into another quagmire from which their will be no easy escape. Thousand more of our brave brothers int the army and the corps will be uselessly sacrificed before the god damned politicians can figure a way out of their idiotic mess. God save our country from it's present government. From Gulf War Vet son of a Korea Vet in Kentucky

Yes I do. But sadly the Bushies don't. Now they want us to believe that if we leave the problems going to grow even worse, and their right. This guy Bush is a royal screw up.
