You need to read the "God Makers". It explains how Mormons think that someday they will become Gods.
How they think that they can call themselves Christians I'll never know because Christianity teaches that there is only 1 God and not that everything that walks and talks is a god. It sure is sad that people deal with their inadequacy issues in such a juvenile manner.

Why don't you read the D&C and see for yourself?
It does NOT tell men to take many wives. First, men had to have approval to take a second wife. He had to prove that he was doing it for spiritual reasons, not because he wanted some variety or something. He had to show he could afford to provide for her and for any children she had or would have (No sponging off the government). And ideally, the wives should be able to get along.
95-97% of the men in the church (when they practiced plural marriage) had ONE or NO wives. 75% of the entire church population did NOT practice plural marriage. Most of the men who did have more than one wife, had only two or three at the most. Large families like Brigham Young's and Heber Kimball's were theh exception rather than the rule.
I sometimes think that people still believe those crazy stories that women were kidnapped from passing wagon trains to be harems for Mormon men. But it was NEVER a contest to see how many women a man could get or anything like that.
As for becoming "little gods" when we die, well, I know that Paul said to the Romans and the Galatians that we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.
Where does the Bible teach that polygamy is against God's law? If it were, then why were men told that, if their brother died without having any children with his wife, that the brother was to marry her and raise up children to his brother. Nothing was said tat this was only to be done if the surviving brother were single. There were no conditions. So, if there are two brothers, and both are married, and one dies before they have any kids, the other brother, BY LAW, was to marry his widowed sister in law, and raise up children to his dead brother. Even if he had a wife already.

Jesus is the only God? What about the Father and the Holy Sprit. Yes Jesus died for my and everyone's sins and rose in his own body. The Doctrine and Covenants are revelations given to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Joseph F. Smith, Wilford Woodruff and Spencer Kimball on various items at the time of the revelations. As for polygamy if was needed so widowed or single women who can't fend for themselves can be cared for by a good man. Yes King Solomon was given permission by God (Jesus Christ) to have many wives.
Polygamy isn't used anymore because the time of its use was over with and yes the U.S. Gov't at the time banned it.
Any LDS man who takes a 2nd wife while still living with the 1st wife will be excommunicated from the church today.
So in conclusion, they don't contradict the Bible or The ten commandments at all.

Okay...you're being slightly ignorant so it's going to be hard answering your question, because you'll probably just think it's sh*t anyway.
But Mormon men would not take on as many wives as they could if it weren't for the law. Committing adultery is a sin, and polygamy died decades ago. Actual LDS followers would not consider being sealed to more than one wife.
Lastly, Mormons do not "tend to forget" that Jesus died for our sins. They remember just as well as the rest of us. However, they believe that Jesus dieing is a very sad point, and they prefer to focus on what he has taught us all.
Hope I helped you. :)

The Doctrine & Covenants is online if you would like to read it for yourself and see for yourself what it says. And anywhere you see a blue underlined word...it is cross-referenced, quite often to the Bible, click on it and read the cross-references. There is nothing secret about it, but we do consider it sacred.
Check it out for yourself:
