Is this person in now or a vet? For obvious security reasons regardless there is no database to check. Many people do many things in or later out of the military. Nobody has total access to everything.

Identity theft is a big reason. But again security is another. What if someone was in and now has a clearance to even work w. a government contractor. At its extreme what if terrorists wanted to target military personel.

Yes you could ask for ID if they are in. You could ask for a DD214 if out (but nobody carries it around).. But unless the situation super warrents and it directly effects you just the asking will be offensive. So make sure you plan on not speaking to that person ever again.

On occasion in these post 9-11 days is that people have jobs (even lower level ones) that require someone to inform somebody if another inquires about their service. That could warrent a visit from the military. Or if the person gets irritated enough it is easy enough to themselves raise a red flag. Then you better make darn sure nobody in your circle is from the mideast or say Columbia.

All I'm saying is be carefull and have a very good reason to want to know.

If they are discharged, ask for their DD-214, if they claim they are on active duty, I agree with the psoter above, have them email you from their official account.

This may be easier than asking for a DD 214... ask them to email you from their official email account. The address will be their name (first, last, often middle) with a .mil domain. ie
first.m.last@us.army.mil

Contact BUPURS-USMC (Bureau of Personnel-) at USMC HQ, 8th and I in Washington D.C. You'll need their social security or military serial number.

Ask to see their DD-214. Or their uniform if they say they are active duty.
