I have an 06 Aveo and have nothing but good things to say about it. It even gets around good in the snow.

Don't listen to bostonianinmo first of all.
They will both be reliable but the Aveo will get better gas mileage. The two really aren't exactly in the same class I don't think. To me the Mazda is a step higher on the price ladder but I could be wrong. I think the new Aveo (sedan) is an attractive little car. It will be dependable and reliable, will be great on gas plus you will get GM's 100,000 mile warranty. I would choose the Aveo.

Mazda all the way. The Aveo is a cheap little piece of junk made by a now-defunct Korean manufacturer. The only worse rated car by Consumer Reports was the old Chevy Cavalier.

These car's are both compacts, so the big question is, what kind of performance are you interested in? The Mazda3 is the better performer here. You will get better mpg with the Aveo, so it's a matter of you'r preference. I own two Aveo's , have found them to be very realiable. The Mazda3 is also a very good car.

The Aveo gets slightly better mileage and has a better warranty, but the 3 is better built, faster, more comfortable, and has a better reliability record. Not much of a contest.

Mazda 3 for its good looks. Reliability, I have no knowledge of either.
