Because they CHOOSE to. Which -- fortunately -- is their perfect right, in most of the world.

(Dang, but WHINERS who seem to think that everyone needs to believe as THEY do are a **major** embarrassment to normal, UNobtrusive and tolerant Christians!)

Taking your 1% guesstimation as fact, that would leave 99% chance that God is not real and/or the Bible is not true -- how could I choose a possibility that is so much less likely over one that is so much more likely?

However, having studied the Bible thoroughly, I had to conclude that there is a 0% chance that is all literally true. That's just my conclusion, but I studied carefully and am awefully confident in it.

One percent would be a horrific overstatement. And, let's note, the first claim (that god, however defined, is real) is thousands of times more likely than the second claim (the bible is true), since we've invented thousands of gods.

Frankly, believing anything with a less-than-50% chance is a fool's bet - what does that make a less than 1% bet?

Easy. I do not believe there is even a 1% chance that the bible is anything more than a collection of parables much the same as ancient Greek or Roman mythology. The bible, and religion in general, is nothing more than a tool created by men for the purpose of exerting control over other men.

That means I must not disbelieve the credo of every religion, not just the christianity that was prevalent where and when I was born.

I also understand why God was invented, and why people believe in him, which also makes it a bit more difficult to believe in him.

I'll go one better... it's a 50/50% chance.... for the Biblical God... and any other God or Goddess that's out there. So how can you just believe one over the other? Why not play it safe and just believe in them all... at least then you'll get more holidays.

the responsibility of proving god exists is with those making the claim. If I tell you there are little green men living in the center of the earth you have every right not to believe unless I can prove it. And, you'd be well within your rights to be angry and resistant if I then said everyone who doesn't believe me goes to jail - you would be horrified - would you not? And what if I told you there would be no proof given and you must accept what I'm telling you on faith only - would you be willing to do that - I think not.

Because I possess rational thought, and rational thought tells me that the chance that God is real and the Bible true is much, much less than 1%.

Have fun with your imaginary friend and your man-made holy book!

is one percent out of a hundred? thanks for that breakdown.
other than that I agree, if there's 1% chance that I'll be killed in a car accident next week I should go rob a bank, open 10 credit card accounts and have sex as much as I can

There's a 1 percent chance Zeus exists as well. Should I follow all of them?
