Other gods are not as conceited? Seriously, I'll tell you of a true personal experience that occurred back in the '60s. The ship's medical corpsman (traditionally and always referred to as Doc) and I were offloading Vietnamese bodies from the motor whaleboat which was slung in the davit. These bodies had been picked up by the whaleboat's crew after a freighter carrying contraband had gone aground on an uncharted reef and sunk. "Doc" I said "these guys ain't even stiff yet. Rigor hasn't set in. How come they just give up like this? An American or a Limey sailor wouldn't have". I will organize and list what I gained from his response.
1, We come from ancestors that lived in a hostile environment. Theirs came from a warm and more benevolent environment.
2. Our god is hostile and demanding. Theirs is friendly and understanding.
3. Our ancestors had to fight for every bite of food that went into their mouth. Theirs picked up their food from under the tree.
4. Our genes make us fighters, stubborn, and never say die, won't give up until the last breath is gone, survivors. Their genes do not.
I apologize for the long post. Hope it helps out some.

Buddha isn't considered a god, even by Buddhists. Buddha is considered to have been a great teacher. Christians seemed to have taken the workings of a teacher and upgraded him to being G-d, Himself.

See the difference?

I'm against gods and religions, but other religions don't seem to push them as heavily in this forum, so I don't say I don't like them as often. I really really don't like sharia law, for example. Perhaps on every answer I could add a disclaimer stating that any implied disapproval of a particular religion or God should be universally applied to all religion or Gods, and that a failure to do so was pure laziness on my part.

Atheists are not AGAINST god... they simply do not believe that invisible, magical sky-fairies (gods) exist. What atheists are AGAINSTS is self-deluded people trying to influence vulnerable minds by asserting that the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of an ignorant bunch of Bronze Age fishermen and wandering, amrauding goat herders have come to represent some kind of cosmic 'truth' pertaining to fundamental matters of existence and reality.

As to why christians are confronted... have you ever heard the expression "It's the spouting whale that gets harpooned?"

Also... Buddha is not a 'god'... Buddhism is not a 'religion'... it is a life-philosophy.

Buddha isn't a god of any sort, the religion of buddhism does not believe in any deities at all. Just thought I'd correct you on that, because it shows a serious lack of knowledge regarding one of the world's six major religions. Such a lack of knowledge on this, would also indicate a lack of knowledge on atheism (as you have obviously shown, as atheists don't believe in any gods at all, no matter what religion they come from). So I suggest you do your research before misrepresenting any other people. x

Buddha was not a God. Just a man and a great teacher.
Atheists are not against the Christian church. Just against delusion and self righteous pontificating.

I don't distinguish. Religious folk consistently purport piety and push tiresome notions to imply that atheists live lives bereft of morals and guidance. They often make outrageous claims that murderous leaders such as Stalin and Hitler were atheist when they could not have been because they believed themselves to be omnipotent gods, welcoming the worship and giving or taking of life which went with it.
Atheist lifestyle is resultant from ingenuity, logic and wisdom developed over eons. Atheists neither need nor desire a god’s confirmation and forgiveness, but simply get on with their lives to maintain civil society. Atheists commit acts based on their individual merits instead of bowing to overreaching rationale of doctrinal demands tied to threat of eternal damnation. Capable human beings are ultimately responsible for their own actions.
The concept of puppeteer gods or demons denies that we have only to answer to ourselves, the law and those we care about. Religion is a scapegoat lifestyle. Unfortunately there will always be some who, if not stopped, have the potential to damage society in the name of their god. That is why there are societal laws.

Well, think about this one. We are on a website that requires us to write in English. All English speaking nations that I know of are overwhelmingly Christian. Those who are most comfortable writing in English have mostly grown up around Christianity.

Christianity is not only the most popular religion in the world, it is the religion OF the most powerful. We live in democratic countries where it is important that the people make informed decisions. And we know that what people do affects us all.

Christians try to pass laws that affect us all - such as eliminating abortion; or having their religion enshrined in our documents, and buildings; restricting the rights of gays; and trying to put religion in our schools.

Look also at President Bush... the man said he was told by God to invade Iraq. Apocalyptic Christians may be all to happy for the next nuclear war to come along (do we really want them in charge of our weapons?).

The truth is, Christians affect us the most so it is them we wish to educate.

1. Atheists are against every God, because the very term means, "no God".
2. Christians are the only ones who attack us, telling us we're "not real" or that we're foolish for not believing in their God. I've never been told by a Wiccan, a Muslim, a Jew, or a Buddhist that I was wrong for believing what I believe.

It's the ultimate slap in the face when someone tells you, "I'll pray for you, and one day, you'll believe," or "Whether you believe it or not, God loves you,"

Only Christians press their religion on me - not anybody else. They accept my decision and leave me alone, your faith, does not.

The Christian deity isn't very nice or very tolerant, to put it diplomatically, whereas wise men like Buddha (and even Jesus) are generally kind and value peace, wisdom and compassion. Even if one doesn't believe in them, at least they non-judgemental and non-offensive. As in, not on the attack.
