Small cross necklaces or pins, crosses to hang on the wall, a silver, crystal or porcelain cup. Or, my favorite is an Irish tradition. Take a linen handkerchief, and fold it into a bonnet shape (Fold 1/3 of the hanky back onto itself, and lightly stitch it in place. On the opposite end, fold the the 2 corners to the underside of the hanky, and stich together. This will make there be a point in the back, fold this down, to meet where the 2 corners were stitched, and stitch it together. Attach ribbons near the folded 1/3 -- front of the bonnet -- for tying it onto the baby.) The baby should wear this bonnet on their christening day. Then, on the wedding day, it is unstitched and the bride carries it as her wedding handkerchief, and her "something old". Then, for the christening of their first child, it is made back into a bonnet, and the tradition continues.

savings bond,
leather bound children's bible with an inscription,
for a girl baby you can buy those little lace trimmed christening bonnets that they can later carry as a hankie when they get married (see one of those Things Remembered stores at the mall)

Silver cup engraved,
silver rattle engraved,

Also, I've seen those plaster of paris kits you can buy so the parents can make imprints of the baby's hands and feet at different ages.

For some faiths, a crucifix is appropriate (mostly Catholics) or rosary beads,

Most people give a gift of cash/savings bonds. To open a savings account for the child.... The godparents may give a special necklace/braclet or other religious symbol or mememto... good luck

Cash or bonds in the baby's name are nice... once they're 18 they'll be matured. Jewelry is usually reserved for the godparents to buy...the child would end up with fifty crosses if everyone bought him jewelry.
