I live in Nevada and am looking to buy a vehicle that is titled in Illinois. How do I make sure that it is all legit? It supposedly belongs to a "grandmother" who has taken ill and was put in a home an no longer needs the car. So, what is "granny" can't sign the title. How do I make sure the car isn't stolen, and how I am to be sure that the DMV isn't going to hassle me on getting the title transfer or getting it registered? What do I need to know? It is a nice car and would love to have it but I don't need all the headaches of getting it registered even if it is a legal title.

This has SCAM written all over it. The seller will have to have "granny" declared incompetent and have a guardian appointed in order to sell the vehicle. The guardian will be able to provide a copy of the court ordered guardianship and you can verify this with the court clerk where it was filed. Lacking that, it's a scam; walk away.
