"mid-size SUV" and "fuel efficient" are mutually exclusive terms. You'll do much better with a minivan. Any minivan. Cheaper to own, operate, and insure as well as safer overall. The older truck-based SUVs roll far too easily and have a single-vehicle fatality rate that is very high.
If you nurse a Blazer or Explorer very gently you might get 16 MPG on the highway and 12 around town. If you want an efficient SUV you'll have to step down to the small ones like RAV4s, CRVs or Forresters. Those will easily crack 25 MPG on the highway and high teens in town. Most of them are built on a car chassis and don't have nearly the rollover problems that the larger ones do.
Any minivan will give you 20 MPG or better on the highway and 16 or so in town unless you romp on the go-button a lot.

BUYING AN SUV TO GET MORE MPG'S well this is a twist on the ol' grey matter- --- usually cause it don't happen .... the 90's vehicles were not the gas savers and buying in the 90's is a cheap price and an expensive ''gas'' deal --- you will not find both in the 90's ... do you want to buy for """what particular reason??""" IF ---- IF you can find a clean 1999 gmc suburban then buy it ---- but be sure the motor is excellent and get the v-8 engine that has lots of power and gives you about 16/18 mpg's on the highway -- that's what I drive and I am happy with the size and comfort and besides what's a car -- they will all get you to the country club it is just a matter of preference of vw or r - royce

NONE of them!! Why do you feel that you need a SUV? do you just need more interior space or do you want 4 wheel drive too? Did you stop and ask yourself "Am I really just trying to hop on the SUV bandwagon?"
One of the main advantages of diesel engines is fuel economy. A diesel engine generally uses less fuel than the same size gasoline engine in comparable vehicles. One reason for a diesel's fuel economy is the thermal efficiency of the diesel fuel compared to gasoline.
An 80`s Mercedes Diesel will cost you less than a 90`s SUV, will haul 6 people with a large trunk, last twice as long in lifetime as that mid 90`s SUV, and still give you 30+MPG because it`s diesel. OH and since its diesel, there are no tune-ups! only OIL changes!!
In 1978, when the Mercedes-Benz Type 300SD (W116) was introduced, the firm launched the "Great Diesel Search" to find out how long lasting and rugged their diesel passenger cars really were. The oldest one was found to be a 1938 Type 260D owned by Paul Dauer of Chicago, but with only 84,742 miles behind it. The high mileage car turned out to be owned by Robert O'Reilly of Olympia, Washington, whose 1957 Type 180D (W120) had traveled 1,184,880 miles.

A minivan will give you more size and better gas mileage than a "SUV".
