I got a picture sent to me on my phone, I can e-mail it if you need a look, it's wasp like in colour, yellow and black bands, but not the same shape and only 2 bands of each, long back section of the body, and rather than oval'd like a wasp more even with the thickness, and a very long looking stinger, what looks like doubled wings dragon flyish in makeup (double wings), with the back pair shorter, black front body, bright yellow eyes and bright yellow feelers.

To be honest the stinger looks too much like a warning than an actual stinger, similar to the way hoverflies imitate wasp colours to scare off other insects.

One crazy looking insect to be found in Ireland!!

Just a point, this is not a wasp (or one that I have ever seen) nor is it local (that I have ever seen).

Horntail was close(ish) but no cigar, this is bright bright yellow, wasps aren't as bright yellow. Not neon or anything but bright. Similar shape to that horntail though.

Ok errm sorta elongated eyes but not much, bright yellow eyes, this was found in northern Ireland but I think it got here by accident a frend sent me the picture from his phone. The feelers are also long (we're not talking wasp here) and straight rather than the hooked sort on wasps that sit close to their face, and again very bright yellow feelers.

I know exactly the one you're referring to; [Giant horn tail] UROCERUS GIGAS; It's body is about 1" long but not as thick as hornet. A black thorax a bright yellow waist band and then another black band in central of abdomen and a yellow tail with a long extension--but not a sting. It has long yellow antennaes and also eyes and legs are yellow. It has two pairs of wings of which one pair are pointing forward and the other that is sticking out horizontaly. It is a fir tree borer often imported in foreign timber and now well established into UK and Ireland. It is said to lay 100 eggs, which separately in a distinct boring in the tree, and it's life in the wood appears usually to be of two and a half or three years duration.

Check out the shape of the eyes.
If the eyes are round instead of elongated like the members of the other Hymenoptera, then it is probably a member of the fly (Diptera) family in disguise.
Would also be beneficial to note if the eyes are really large and round, or tiny and round.
Since you note the stinger isn't much of a stinger, does the insect have pincers to bite with? If it has tiny eyes and pincers(mandibles) it could be a member of the (Hemiptera)dragonflies, dobsonflies family.
Would be useful to know the general location where the insect is being seen. That is useful for classifying the family.

Wow, they're extremely! i do no longer understand plenty approximately pest administration, yet with a bit of luck those men are palatable to birds. you will possibly evaluate installation a chicken feeder to entice some passerines on your backyard. If the birds like those bugs, they would be long gone fairly quickly.
