The followers of Christ are the sheep.

In the very first verse of the parable of the sheep and the goats Matthew, immediately establishes the Kingship and authority of Christ in using the title that Christ so often used in identifying Himself as the “Son of Man” (see John 5:27 and Daniel 7:13-14). The Sheep are placed at His right hand. This is a place of honor and shows that the Sheep are esteemed by Christ. Compare this with Matthew 22:64, Luke 22:69, Acts 7:55 and Hebrews 1:13 where Christ is at the right hand of the Father. The Goats are placed on the left. Testimony is given, judgment is made, and reward and punishment are the result.

The people of the time needed a comparison they knew a lot about. Most people had sheep and knew the characteristics of these dumb animals. They require much care and are quite helpless. They will follow their food source without looking up and walk right off a cliff. If they fall down they do not know how to right themselves. They are prone to infestations of all kinds and must be tended to regularly in order to keep them healthy. They spook easily and follow their neighbors into danger. We as humans also follow the crowd and get into trouble we cannot get ourselves out of. Hope this helps.

Sheep are followers, easily led, targeted by predators like wolves, and are dependent on someone to lead them and protect them. Jesus is our Shepherd, and the Lamb of God. He leads us and protects us from wolves in sheep's clothing when we follow Him and depend on Him as our Shepherd.
