Ear wax is just like what people get. A normal, waxy, brown discharge that usually causes no problems. Ear mites are parasites. They usually resemble dirt or very fine coffee grounds. If your dog is constantly scratching his ears, this is probably the cause. They itch terribly. His ears may also develop a "bad" smell. Clean ears shouldn't smell, or only smell slightly earthy.
Your vet can thoroughly clean out his ears, and prescribe medication to kill the mites. They're tenacious, so you have to follow the instructions to the letter. After you apply the medicine to his ears, he will shake his head to try to remove it, so I apply the medicine, and then gently massage his ears to get it in there really well so he can't dislodge it, and spread it around. I think the massaging helps with the itching, too.
Whatever you do, DON'T go poking around in his ears with a Q-tip! You will do more harm than good. To remove wax, you can clean his ears by gently wiping with a clean damp rag wrapped around a finger, or using medicated wipes from the pet store. It helps to have someone hold his head still so you can do a thorough job. The ears are very sensitive on most dogs.
You can buy ear mite treatment anywhere, but I recommend seeing the vet. Some or most of what you buy over the counter is a waste of money. Also, the vet can safely remove the crud from deep down in his ears, getting him better a lot more quickly. It's relatively inexpensive to take him in for this, and well worth the money. A pet infested with ear mites is miserable.
Hope I've answered your question. Good luck!

Ear wax is secretion of an oily, waxy substance seen in almost all animals including humans. Ear mites are small insects that inhabit the ears. Take the dog to the vet and get the ears cleaned thoroughly.

If you stick a q tip in the dogs ear, straight down, dont make any turns, and swab. if it looks brown and dirty, it is ear mites. The dog needs to be treated for this, it can be very painful.
