If no abuse by either parent is present I'd grant joint custody with physical custody going to the parent who has the better living conditions for permanent residence. Religion or lack thereof has absolutely nothing to do with it.

This decision should be based on what is best for the child, and depends entirely on the individual's parenting skills. Not all Christians are holier than thou, nor are all athiests so free to let their children choose ANY religion to get into.
Those assumptions aside, I would look at who spent more time with their child, the age and gender of the child, who has the better job and living space, and if any accusations have merit or is false.
If things are still equal, then why not joint custody?

Evan as an atheist I would hope that the question didn't boil done to nothing more than this.

Your question is designed to simply make us announce where our sympathies lie. I doubt many atheists would want to leave a child in a home with the superstitious; and I doubt many xians would want the child raised by unbelievers. So each of us would vote our way, but it's not that simple. There are a multitude of other factors that go into such a choice.

Courts are not allowed to discriminate based on religious preference. More details of the parents would be required. And for those of you who sided automatically with the Christian parent, just keep in mind if you were in another country that really could prevent you from gaining custody of your child.

The Christian.....

been there, done that.....EX claimed Christians are crazy, CPS took the children....

the oldest escaped from foster care abuse and is doing well today....

the twins were put in foster care, lots of abuse and put to work in a strip club by the foster parent, when they were 18 they were" supposedly" released from foster care....Have no word (10 yrs) or evidence that they survived to be released...

the youngest was 2 1/2 and at age 16 was kicked out of the home by the atheist father...took two yrs for him to find me but the boy is 19 and home...and believes in God....

That Judge sided with the Atheist and destroyed and or caused great harm to many lives.....

No , I am not crazy and never was.....but an atheist can use such a "hate crime tool" with CPS as the weapon to cause great harm.....

Just more religious persecution......

as a judge i would have to side with the parent who was the best suited to raise the child. as a Christian, while i would lean toward the Christian parent, there would have to be many other contributing factors. being an athiest does not mean someone doesn't have strong morals or values. besides the child was not being taken from the other parent - it would have time with both.

No way for us to know who would be the better parent based on their views of a deity.

Parenting is about loving and raising our children to be good people.

If I had to make that decision based entirely on the Christians I see here in this forum, I would pick the atheist without hesitation.

I would look at the other factors, like income, mental stability, where the parents live (and the local school), who has a better relationship with the child, etc.

It doesn't make a difference what religion the parent is or if the parent does not believe in any religion. What matters is how the parent cares for the child and takes on the responsibilities of parenthood.
Good morals and the traits of honesty, etc,. are what counts.

In Todays "Twisted World" it would Only be Politically Correct to Deny Custody to the Christian because they might "Impose Christian Values" upon the young "Skulls Full of Mush" and actually raise up someone who would Vote Them Out of Office!!! John
